Cortland Eye Center Services

Total eyecare, from initial examination to delicate eye surgery, is available through our office.

Among the wide range of services we offer our patients are:

Comprehensive eye examinations

A comprehensive eye examination is a thorough assessment of your eye health and vision, typically performed by an optometrist or ophthalmologist. The exam includes a series of tests and evaluations to detect refractive errors, eye diseases, and other conditions that can affect vision or eye health. A comprehensive eye exam is recommended for people of all ages, even if they do not have noticeable vision problems, as some eye conditions may develop without obvious symptoms.

No stitch small incision cataract surgery

No-stitch small incision cataract surgery (often called phacoemulsification) is a modern technique used to treat cataracts, a condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, impairing vision. This type of surgery is considered less invasive and more efficient than traditional cataract surgery, offering quicker recovery and fewer complications.

Glaucoma treatment and surgery

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). If untreated, glaucoma can lead to irreversible vision loss. Early detection and treatment are crucial to managing the disease and preventing further damage. Treatment for glaucoma typically involves medications, laser therapy, or surgery, depending on the type and severity of the condition.

Pediatric eyecare

Pediatric eyecare focuses on the vision health of infants, children, and adolescents. Early eye exams are crucial, as many eye conditions, if left untreated, can affect a child’s development, learning, and overall quality of life. Some visual impairments are subtle and might not be noticed until they significantly impact a child’s ability to perform everyday activities. Early detection and treatment of vision problems can help prevent long-term complications.

Diabetic retinopathy evaluation and treatment

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. It is a leading cause of blindness in adults, but early detection and treatment can help prevent significant vision loss. Diabetic retinopathy occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina, leading to various stages of the disease, from mild changes to severe vision impairment.

Consultations and second surgical opinions

In healthcare, consultations and second surgical opinions are valuable tools for patients seeking to make informed decisions about their treatment, especially when considering complex or high-risk procedures like surgery. Consulting with additional experts can help clarify diagnoses, explore alternative treatment options, and increase confidence in a proposed treatment plan.

Low vision assessment

Low vision refers to significant visual impairment that cannot be corrected by standard glasses, contact lenses, surgery, or medical treatment. It affects a person's ability to perform everyday tasks such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces, despite the use of corrective lenses or medical treatment. Low vision is a major concern for people with conditions like age-related macular degeneration (AMD), diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and cataracts.

Treatment for eye injuries/infections

Eye injuries and infections can vary in severity from mild irritation to serious conditions that could lead to permanent vision loss. Prompt and appropriate treatment is essential to reduce the risk of complications. The treatment approach depends on the type of injury or infection, the affected part of the eye, and the underlying cause.
